Lionfish in Akumal Waters

During the last few months, the lionfish has been spotted in several different diving sites in Akumal's fore reefs.

This brings a new concern to the reef’s delicate ecosystem and measures need to be taken.

Centro Ecológico Akumal, in collaboration with the local diving community and CONANP, is acting as a collecting center in the area.

Managing the watershed

What to do in case you spot a lionfish:
Report any sighting of the lionfish to the closest dive center or directly to Centro Ecológico Akumal. In your report include the time, exact location and size of the animal, if possible.

Sea Turtle Season

Sea turle

The sea turtle season is almost finished.

This has been a low year; CEA had to finish its turtle walks almost two months early.

Caretta caretta (Loggerhead):
99 nests and 7,389 hatchlings.

Chelonia mydas (Green Turtle):
92 nests and 3,855 hatchlings.

If you want to support this program, you may join us on our hatchlings' releases. Donations are always welcome. Releases occur almost every weekday, Monday to Friday at 7PM at Centro Ecológico Akumal. Please check before, to see if we have baby turtles to release the day you want to come.

For further information please contact:

International Beach Cleanup

On September 19, Centro Ecológico Akumal participated in the International Beach Cleanup led by the Ocean Conservancy. CEA, with the help of some volunteers, cleaned about 10 km of beaches and picked up around eight jumbo plastic bags full of trash. The weirdest thing found was a TV that was resting between the Akumal Beach Resort and Casa Encantada, in Akumal Bay. We know that these are not the sort of odd or expected species that you want to find when you visit our bays. CEA invites you to be aware of where you put your trash and where it does go.

Think About Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

by www.projectkaisei.org
According to the Project Kaisei team, it is estimated that over 60% of the plastic and other wastes (including rubber and aluminum) in the ocean come from land-based sources and, once in the sea, they are at the mercy of the confluence of tides, currents and winds because they are buoyant. Over time through exposure to the sun and heat, some plastic materials can disintegrate into ever-smaller pieces due to weather and UV impact.

The "Plastic Vortex," or the "garbage patch," is within an area that is technically referred to as the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone. Floating patches have been reported by sailors and fishermen, but relative to the large area of the North Pacific Ocean, large masses are not observed frequently.

Why is the Plastic Vortex a problem?

Plastics and other wastes in the oceans:

  • Can kill marine life;
  • May be entering our food chain (Studies on this issue will be undertaken by the Project Kaisei Science Team and other researchers.);
  • Continues to increase due to poor waste management practices on land and sea; and
  • Can have a negative effect on people's health and safety.
